I've never worn socks with spikes. That's some 40+ years now. I never had a problem. Obviously you're doing something wrong since as you point out many are not wearing socks and believe me they are not tearing up their feet.
Put baby powder in them and that will prevent "skin ripping."
The socks are with spikes in shoe already...no need!
It's the same idea as why you want a lighter shoe. Less weight. I've never done it or cared enough, but it makes sense
It might make more of a difference on longer races, idk. I'm mid-distance
