This is a question I've been pondering for a while. Why doesn't the NFHS organize a national championship for track and cross country? I mean we would see a lot better team and even individual performances if there were, instead of pay-to-race individual "nationals" like NB and Footlocker/Nike, an actual national championship. Here's how it would work:
6 Regions:
-Northeast (New York, PA, Mass., etc.)
-Southeast (VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, etc.)
-Upper Midwest (ND, SD, NE, KS, etc.)
-Lower Midwest (TX, OK, AR, CO, etc.)
-Southwest (NM, CA, AZ, NV, etc.)
-Northwest (OR, WA, UT, ID, Montana, etc.)
Each state-meet winning team and a certain number of top individual performers (i.e top 5 finishers not on a championship team) will move onto the Regionals, in a shootout-style invitational, as well as opt-in events such as steeplechase, hammer, javelin, and the 5000 for the top 3 willing athletes in each section (distance or throws) to get a second event.
The top team and top 5 individuals in each event not on a regional-winning team will move onto the nationals, again a shootout-style invitational. The championship relay teams and top two finishers in each individual event get a chance to be on the USA youth world championship team.
Thoughts? Wouldn't this make more sense for, lets say someone in CA running national-quality times, and can't afford to fly all the way to Greensboro, NC for NB? This way listed above preserves the team aspect for track and the individual aspect for XC, and allows kids to run on for their HS squads.
