Short question is if anyone can recommend a mild anti-nausea medication that could be safe for a teen to take on an occasional basis prior to a race? We'll definitely check with a doctor, but the LRC community usually has good knowledge as a starting point.
The background is that I have a daughter in high school who suffers terribly from race anxiety to the point that she vomits during her races or runs relatively slowly trying to avoid vomiting. It's far worse in track than cross country, apparently because of the sense in track that all eyes are on her and there's no distant course to disappear to. She's miserable about it and is embarrassed by the vomiting and unhappy with the poor results.
We and her coaches have tried everything we can think of to help. From talks about race anxiety and coping strategies to my wife and I not coming to her races (in case she was feeling pressure from us) to even having her see a youth-oriented sports psychologist who was recommended to us. Nothing has worked.
My latest idea is that maybe this is a case where it would be helpful to address the symptom. My thinking is that lots of runners get nervous but her immediate problem is the nausea/vomiting plus the fact that she is stressed worrying about vomiting. So if we could address the nausea and remove that part of the stress, maybe over time it will lead to reduced anxiety in the first place. Hopefully a few good race experiences could put her on a path of not having to deal with this and not need any medication.
Thanks for any ideas
