I ran a trail race on Saturday morning - moderately hilly but the real killer was a lot of loose dry sand. Felt fine during the race but for the rest of the day and all day Sunday walking or even just manually bending my right knee was really painful. Now three days later I can walk fine, but going up and down stairs is still painful and the top of my kneecap is still tender to the touch. The pain is in the area described as "above kneecap" at this website:

So what is this? I initially thought runner's knee but that's usually described as being behind or around the knee cap, which doesn't quite match. That link says quad tendonitis, but I'd think that would have a more gradual onset - I never had so much as a twinge in this spot before the race.
Anyone had a similar issue, and how did you fix it?
Thanks!
