Running on injured toe

So last Tuesday I stubbed my pinky toe extremely hard while trying to reach the phone. That night I woke up to an intense pain in and around my toe. The next morning it was swollen to at least twice it's normal size. I went over to my dad, who is a physical therapist and he checked it out and he concluded it wasn't broken just jammed really bad. So I ran Wed, Thurs, but it really swelled up bad after that, so I took Fri. off and had a 5k race this morning. It hurt like crazy while running on it and it has swelled up so bad I can't see the bones or veins in my foot. Has anyone else had experience with anything like this? How did you deal with it? How long did it take to recover and have no pain again? I ran a 17:33 5k last week and 20:07 today, is that reasonable with my toe? Thanks for your help

I have not had any issues with my pinky toe, but I have hurt my big toe a couple times over the years. One time was from jamming it, and another time was from wearing the Strassburg Sock for an extended period of time (pulling back on the toe led to a strain).

I generally was able to take a little time off, and then resume training with easy runs, but my advice would be to take time off from running if it is giving you that much pain. Maybe do pool or bike workouts, if those don't bother it. Basically, if it is slowing you down over 2 minutes, it is probably bad enough to become chronically injured, or to set off a chain of other injuries. There are some times to push through the pain, but you also have to recognize the times you need to back off.

I've done this so many times now.

Here's the deal. With the pinky, I just tape in to the other toe. Two days off and ease back into things. Virtually no time off.

The big toe, however, is another story. Don't mess with the big toe. You may need to get it set, cast.
