Criminality of weed was always more of a sociopolitical issue than one of public safety. I won't run down the safety profile of weed here - it's been established over some decades in pedantic detail. Compared to alcohol and even caffeine, weed is pretty much as benign as they come. This has always been obvious.
The criminality of weed came about because those who smoked it tended to be of the counter-culture (social criminals). Opium was all fine until Chinese immigrants got amongst it then BAM. Same with weed. Those darn hippies.
Now the demographic smoking it has changed to include more professionals and the middle class, and hey presto. Moves to legalise.
Why this isn't obvious to everyone is quite a mystery to me. FWIW I smoked weed VERY heavily for nearly 16 years, all while exceling at uni then on into the workforce as a (now) senior professional.
I gave it up because I realised I could be spending my spare time doing other things. So I stopped.
Yep, it's a demonic terror, all right.
