This isn't a serious topic. Mostly I just wanted to hear what the people of LetsRun think are the greatest track and field and road running world records, either male or female.
For a long time, I thought Daniel Komen's 7:20 3,000M was considered to be the craziest distance WR, but lately I've seen a lot argue that Bekele's 5K WR is tougher to break than either his 26:17 or Komen's 3K record (which would make sense, as it's rarely run). What about Guerrouj's 3:26.00, 3:43, 3:31/3:48 indoors, or 4:44? I'm sure the 2,000M or the 1,000M could be broken (3:43 Ngeny has the 1,000M record, right?), because here very rarely run, but I don't know. I'm also not sure how good the steeplechase WR is, since I never followed it closely. But then Rudisha ran sub-1:41...in the Olympics! What about Wilson Kipsang's 2:03:23 or Tadese's astonishing sub-58:30? The marathon is so often run that I can imagine it has a very impressive WR.
The same could be said for the sprints, where the world's top runners don't run tactically, but sprint in all races. This makes Usain Bolt's and Michael Johnson's WRs even more impressive. Think of how many insane athletes have ran as fast as they humanly can over 100M, and Bolt is still over 0.1 faster than ALL of them!
I know less about women's records, but so many of them are so far beyond the reach of current athletes (whether this is due to cheating or not is a perennial question) that it makes for interesting conversation. Personally I find it insane that a woman has run a 47-second 400M. What's a sub-48 equivalent to for men? Sub-43? Maybe a sub-49 is equivalent to a men's sub-44?
Similarly, you rarely see women run sub-2:00 for the 800M (I'd say it's equivalent to sub-1:45 for men), but the record is somehow an astonishing 1:53! The women's 1,500M WR is, of course, equally insane. 3:50?! Only Chinese women have "ran" sub-3:52. Not saying they didn't run. There are just such big gaps between female WRs and the nearest competitors, compared to men's WRs. One thing I know less about is the female mile. Is 4:12 even a good time? Will women ever run under 4:00?
The women's 5K record by Dibaba is almost universally considered to be legit, but Junxia's 29:31 is almost universally considered to be dirty. Thoughts? Is 29:31 that much better than 14:11? What about Radcliffe's 2:15 (or 2:17 in a female-only race)? How in God's green earth is Junxia's 3,000M WR 6 (!!) seconds faster than #2?!
It looks like Kiplagat recently ran a WR in the half-marathon. How does that compare to other women's WRs? And I haven't even began to talk about FloJo's WRs.
What about both the men's and women's 2 mile WRs? Could these be a lot faster if the distance was more frequently ran? Same thing with the mile WRs?
WRs I know little about, but would love to hear others talk about: relays, 20,000/30,000M/1 hour run on the track, 10-mile run/5K/10K/20K and other road records, 300M/600M/60M and other weird track distances, hurdles, and ANY field events. Also, indoor WRs.
Mostly I just want this to be a centralized location for ANY WR discussion. It's just a fun topic to talk about. I'm sure lots on here have plenty of good things to say.
