Don't get me wrong. Mead is a very good runner. However, I remember in the early '80s when Moorcroft (a sub 3:50 miler) ran a mind blowing 13:00 at 5000m. This was during the same era that Coe was running the 800m in 1:41. 30 years later, a 1:41 performance is still incredible. A sub 3:50 performance is also quite special. However, it seems like every Tom, Dick and Harry can run 13 fla at 5000m. Why?
Let's look at Mead's career

Now, a couple of years later 13:02? ...with very slow 3:41 PR at 1500m..... Makes no sense at all...
And really, the pace slowed down when the rabbits departed. In a race full of sub 13 guys, he would have run sub 13... Really? A never medalled NCAA guy? No particular speed (3:41PR at 1500m). No particular endurance (27:59 PR at 10000m).
Never has been an outstanding runner. He is no Moorcroft or Maree...
Insane...
Nothing above (until 2012) points to a 13:02...
