Maybe it was to fast. But, apparently to win London these days you have to either go with the leaders or try to pace a sub 2.04.30. Thats INSANE, to win London you might need to throw down 14;20s

Sure but the whole point was that the pacers are there to ensure a fast overall time. If the leaders at an unpaced race went out hard, sure, you've got to go with them to win, but your time isn't going to be as fast as if it was a properly paced race.
In the London 2009 edition, Wanjiru did the first 5k in 14:08 AND he followed it up with a 14:22... Now that was fast...
He still managed to run 2:05:10

Yeah, remember that start to the race, was really crazy. Like on pace to run under 2 hours.
Just rewatched Sammy's last race in Chicago '10 again, what a class act.
14:21 first 5K at London is worth perhaps 14:41 elsewhere
its very downhill
The Brojos want to get rid of pace setters for London. If they did that, Mo Farah would have won in a 2:11 sprint to the finish. It's pace setters that make the race exciting as they help produce 2:04's
Because that's what champions do.
I agree, the 14:21 wasn't obscene. These runners know their bodies very well, and they're prepared to execute a 120 minute effort. Now, they're not rocking back on their heels to toes like the rest of the hobby joggers with their gu thinking about their pace plan and such. They take off at a slightly faster pace because this field is so loaded. They have to get out of the gate somewhat fast to avoid being run over. So, a 30 second first 200 can easily set the tone for a 14:21 5k. It takes a little while to calm down from all that. Really, these Kenyans striding along is probably like a 2:10 first 800.
