Hello all,
I am a 19 year old who has been suffering from shin splints for a very long time now.
First of all, some context: I'm tall at about 1.85m and I weigh 63kg or so. I lead a rather sedentary lifestyle and my fitness is pretty poor. Where I come from, we can deduct 2 months off our 2 year long compulsory military service if we manage to pass a fitness test.
I managed to pass most of the stations, but my running was not quite there yet, so I began to train rather seriously for it. We had to run 2.4 kilometres in about 12 and a half minutes, and my personal best was about a minute above that.
I was making decent progress, but soon after my left shoe had its sole peeled off. I didn't think much into the role it plays in cushioning my footfalls, and I just kept on running, almost daily, without caring because I thought that it felt the same as I ran anyway. I begin to develop a slight pain along the inside of my left shin, and once more I didn't think much into it - my siblings, friends, and myself were all under the impression that it was just weak muscles sore after running.
When the pain became too much, I would just rest for a week or so and then resume once it subsides. And then the cycle repeats and I foolishly let it go on for the next couple of months.
I finally sought out an orthopaedist as I realised that this destructive cycle was getting me nowhere. An x-ray scan showed no abnormalities and the doctor diagnosed me with shin splints and gave me orthotics to wear when I run. (These:

)
I also got new shoes: the "ASICS GEL-Kayano 19". It felt comfortable enough, but as I went out to run again (exclusively on stadium tracks and no concrete) my shin hurt as badly as it ever had. So I visited the doc again, and got an MRI. The conclusion was this - "Mild edema noted along the periosteal surface of the mid-tibia posteromedially, suggestive of tibial stress reaction. No fracture or abnormal bone marrow signal demonstrated."
I resigned myself to just drop the running and settle for the full undiscounted conscription duration. I've never ran a single step since the 28 November 2013.
I've been swimming every day since and focusing on the freestyle stroke, and occasionally I'll do some pool jogging too. I've been stretching my calves every day, and I've tried all sorts of remedies found on the Internet: including foam rolling (though with a water bottle as substitute) and putting my feet on a ball and rolling it around, standing, kneeling on my feet, etc etc. I also bought some shin supports for compression, and I ice my shins daily without fail since long before I even visited the doctor. I've also been taking a Vitamin D/calcium/magnesium supplement.
The pain minimised to a very bearable level, but as I sit or lie around I can often feel an occasional twinge. But here's the real shocker for me: About three weeks ago I had a class barbeque gathering, and it involved quite a lot of cycling and standing around for a couple hours. The result was pain in BOTH my shins. My right shin never had any sort of pain whatsoever even from the time I ran daily. It frightened me to no end.
The military will not downgrade my health status unless I develop full blown stress fractures, so there's a very high chance that I'll be enlisting within a month. I want to make sure I recover by then, but I'm not sure how.
From most accounts, shin splints/stress reactions seem to be something that goes away after a couple of weeks, but for my case it just refuses to go away despite me dropping the running for months. Could it the swimming, or there's some other reason for this? But when I'm not swimming I'm just sitting around most of the time these days; so I am really at a complete lost and so I'm here to ask for advice that could hopefully help me along.
I know this has been a really long post, and I really thank you for reading this to this point if you're still here.
Regards,
Fingolfin
