The sort of person who doesn't even have a saw will make a mess with a hand plane. They'll end up with an un-level surface along the bottom which will look terrible. Plus a cheap hollow door is probably a laminate over a particle board core, which would chip when using a plane.
A plane would be a good choice if it just had some high spots, or if a door isn't closing right and you just need to knock some spots down. A saw is a better choice for trimming the whole door.
