I bought it out of curiosity. About 25 percent of the book is new material, and the rest was already published on the blog. The story does not really get resolved, but I think she does a good job vividly describing what she went though.

I find this really strange. Was the blog really so incredibly addictive that when she stopped updating it, your life fell apart? And is it just one person who keeps posting under different names about how violated they felt when the blog was discontinued, or are there really a whole bunch of people feeling all this anger?
Anyway, best of luck moving on with the rest of your life!

Interesting how you got all of that out of what I wrote. I think you should become a psychologist, or maybe you already are one, but if so, probably not a very good one. Yes what she did was pretty classless and I really would have no desire to read her book, but I am pretty sure my life did not fall apart.
Does my desire not to buy her book really bother you that much. Anyway, best of luck moving on with the rest of your life. It must suck worrying so much about what other people think that it causes you to overreact.

Well then why are you still reading the thread?
I am pretty sure she is not writing this thread, so I am unsure of what the point of your question is. I was obviously interested in her blog, was disappointed when she quit in the middle of it and how she handled it and now I am saying I have no desire to read anything she has written. This thread I find interesting however and I have no problem with those that want to read her book; I personally do not want to.

So why do you bother to read what I wrote and respond to it. You are actually pretty pathetic, but I think you already know that. People like you are pretty funny, but at least you have the correct screen name.

Awwww did mommy forget your bottle tonight.
I don't see how she's making any money off this when the book costs 2.99. I bet the distributor takes a chunk of the sale, too.

Wow. You should write a book on how to read minds! And you could...wait, that would be unconscionable, actually making money off your talent instead of giving it away for free. Just start a blog on how to read minds -- that would be the only fair way to go about it.
Let me ask your unbelievably self-centered and miserably stupid ass a question. (If you don't understand it, have one of your caregivers explain it to you verrry sloooooooooowly.) If a person who sings for free at parties and so on is eventually told "Hey, you could honestly make a CD and go pro," and the person did so and became a popular recording artist, would this be an unethical move?
There are a lot of stupid and mean people on this site, but even the most toxic hammerheads don't usually exhibit your mega-exaggerated sense of entitlement.
Interesting how some of you posters jump to incredible conclusions and go off on these rants that make no sense. This person can do whatever she wants and you can buy her "book" if you want. I thought how she handled it was pretty classless. Go read some of her last posts, where she says she is going to do something and then doesn't. Read her interview with the author of "Running on Empty". She just does not impress me at all with her comments. Just my opinion. The running on empty author has been very classy, the she was once a runner, not so much. Sorry some of you seem so offended that I do not think she handled it well. Why so bothered by what an anonymous poster thinks. It is just one persons opinion, although others also seem to have a similar opinion. I really don't care what you think and if you buy the book and enjoy it, great for you. Just relax and not get so worked up about things and I promise life will get a lot better for you.

I know this is a little off topic, but I was wondering which middle school you will be attending next year? Do you know if they have a cross country and track program at the middle school you will be attending? Good luck with your running and hopefully they do have a running program so you can join the team. Take care.
All seems a bit too emo for me. Chopper Reid would have some words for her.

Curiosity is getting the best of me, so hopefully you can come back on and explain this comment of yours. Someone asked me why I was still reading this thread since I am not planning on reading anything that "She was once a runner" writes. I explained that I was pretty sure she is not writing this thread. so my point was me reading this thread has nothing to do with reading her book, since she isn't the one writing on this thread (or maybe people like Saul Wellingood really are "She was once a runner"). Anyway, what does me commenting on her not being the one writing on this thread have to do with reading minds?

No kidding. Good for her. I wasn't convinced she was going to follow through with it.
It's a shame she stopped the blog. That format matched the story and her writing style so well.
I'm undecided as to whether I am going to buy it.
I decided to publish my memoirs on Smashwords.com as well. Here is the link:
Thanks very much.
I hope it can help people overcome or at least better understand eating disorders. I posted an excerpt on my blog today: http://www.trainingonempty.blogspot.com/2012/10/excerpt.html
Wow...I can't believe I actually read through this entire message board haha.
I read both books. It was interesting to see that "She Was Once A Runner" started out as a blog. I didn't realize someone had already done what I started in December 2012. I plan on making my blog into a book soon, too--I'm getting help from my advisor in college as I am an English Major, Writing minor and plan to pursue a writing-related field.
My story deals with developing an eating disorder while running collegiately, but it is more about the pressures I put on myself rather than my coach putting pressure on me; in fact, when he found out about my ED he was thankful I gained weight back and said I looked so much stronger. He didn't care that my times were a little slower, only that I was healthy. It is fascinating reading about D1 experiences.

With all the discussion around Mary Cain and Alberto etc, I am bumping this thread in homage to the former blog turned e-book She Was Once A Runner:
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/156110
Having myself been what would now be defined as a whistle blower, there is a great deal of risk involved in coming forward. I am happy to read that runners now feel comfortable speaking publicly about negative experiences in an effort to create space for change. I cannot believe how much Mary Cain's account of her time at NOP, a professional organization, mirrored my own collegiate running experience. I had assumed that at the professional level, coaches weren't looking for that quick fix of low weight=fast times because one would expect pro coaches & teams to be invested in their athletes long term. I am looking forward to seeing how Mary uses her new platform to #Fixgirlssports. Who knows, her actions might even inspire me to start up the blog again.
