Lol, THATS AMAZING!!! I'm 10. Last spring (when I was 9) I run a 5k at 27:40 (your son did 8 seconds better than me) that's definitely a great time! Especially for his age.

7-year-old in 5K's what is a good time?
Usually anything with ice cream will work.
I think that's a pretty good time for a 7 year old. My 9 year old ran her first 5k in 24:00. A week later she did another 5k in 22:01. Then another week after she did 21:53. Do you think that is a good time for a nine year old girl?

No.
I think its a good time especially with today's sedentary lifestyle. I ran 39:45 10k at 11 with minimal training and was winning my age group at most races. Fast forward to high school, my best was 35:xx and was mediocre at the time. I was told that I was really good at age 11-13. So by high school when others started catching up and beating me, I quit because I was so frustrated. I wish that I would not have as I never ran over 35 mpw and will never know what I could have gone. As above, keep it fun.
My 4 year old does 5 minute miles for as long as she want to run. I think the longest was about 8 miles. It helps when I bring some dog treats along for motivation.
Having a kids outside doing any activity is beneficial over being an action hero in a virtual game world. Your kid is already in the top 5% of fitness just by going outside. :)
FAT or hand timed makes no difference for a kid who will be running >67 seconds. How about a 10-100 yd/m dash or fly, or a broad jump?
If you have a kid who has a terrible start, say it takes 3 to 4 seconds for him to go the first 10 meters, that will be completely obfuscated over a 400m trial compared to a quick baseball kid who can run the same or slower over 400m, but who covers the 10m in 60% the time.
And realistically you don’t need to time someone to know if they’re quick, you can tell they’re explosive solely by the naked eye and assessing form. If you look friggin awesome and keep a low angle with strong arms and legs, tidy form coming up, and look impressive, you’re quick. If not, you’re typical or worse.
Have another kid.
