If my race is at 3:30 PM... and I do a 3 hour jog around 11:30-12, will this benefit me? For the 3:30 PM race, I would also be doing a 2 mile warmup jog or something like half an hour before the race starts. I can only do the 3 mile jog ~3-4 hours before the race (only time slot that I'm free).
I typically do that for afternoon races. Often longer, and earlier, but that type of time difference isn't unheard of... It mostly comes down to how much running you typically do before you start to feel good and loose. I need eight to ten before I really start to feel loose and comfortable, and I find that much more practical spread out over the day, with a nice thorough stretch after the first run.
I generally do a 10 minute shakeout jog very slow in the morning before a race. Then I continue on as scheduled, warmup before the race, etc. But it loosens you up and i've been a really consistent racer since I started doing this...before I did this inconsistent would be a word used to describe my racing
