I think it would be 700m.
I think it would be 700m.
I think KB would waste him over 700m.
I'd say about 525-550m would be the closest.
Bekele would still wax him at 600m.

Agreed, tops.

This is not necessarily true. My calculations place Bekele at about 1:18 for 600. This would be 1:44 pace for 800, in other words, coming through 400 in 52 and maintaining for another 200. Bolt would be with him at 400 fairly easy. It's just a matter of when Bolt runs out of gas. Bolt could for sure stay with him for 500, probably close to 600.
OK - this is from the horse's mouth guys -
“In my eyes it is correct that Usain gets that much more attention, because what he did was unique. He not only won the two golds, but broke two World records as well. What Usain Bolt does is good for the development of our sport,” said Bekele, who had said earlier in the week that he would be ready for an 800m contest against the Jamaican. “I would definitely beat him at this distance.”
There, you heard it.
If Carl Lewis was any guide it'd be 400m. Lewis completely folded in the final straight over 300m. Bolt's a better 400 runner, though, so I'd say 500m.
This could be an intriguing new trend. Sprinter vs carthorse one-on-one over a middle distance. For big bucks. With betting. That might bring in crowds like they used to get in the 1800's!
This is one of the more intriguing questions that I have seen on Letsrun. My guess is that they would be pretty close together at 600 meters. In match races between race horses, the horse that gets the lead is usually the winner. If the same applies in human racing, Bolt would have a clear advantage. I think such a match-up would be fascinating, and great for the sport.
601m
300 meters.
600 meters. After that, Bolt will not be able to hold on.
Do you guys have a frame of reference, or is everyone just guessing?
Bolt looked like he was running a 1500m when he went 9.58, long, smooth, and relaxed.. How do you all know he wouldn't be elite at 800m?
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
