sure it can,
the sciatic nerve runs all down the leg and the pain can run all the way down into your foot.
it can cause something that feels like a cramp in the calf muscles, but is more of a muscle shut-down - you can really damage the muscles if you try to do too much when they aren't firing properly
ok what kind of stretches can i do? or would a chiropractor be the best bet?
this is one place where a chiro can probably help.
are you having any piriformis or glute issues? a tight piriformis can irritate the sciatic too, that's what happened to me last spring and the chiro fixed it quickly
ok thank you this has helped out alot
Any update on this? My friend has the same problem. It has hampered him for 2.5 years. He has limited resources and is w/o health insurance.
He tried taking time off and the it only gets better little before pain returns on different part of the left leg. Now the pain is down at his calf muscle.
Is the chiropractor the best option here as stated by the previous poster? Any good recommendation in NYC metro area?

It sounds like I have the same problem as the OP. I have been dealing with this for a year now, and I have had every treatment under the sun on my calf and the numbness/cramping/nervy pain keeps coming back when I start up running (Also I was tested for compartment syndrome, but it was negative). Early April I decided to start hitting the gym and build up strength in my legs, and found that lunges, leg press, squares and hamstring curls (basically anything involving the hamstring) really gave my calf relief (but the problem of numbness/cramping/nervy pain ultimately would com back).
After reading about sciatic problems, I am convinced it articulates perfectly what I have been dealing with over this last year. So my question is, outside of the obvious "go to a Chiro or PT" (which I have spend too much money on already), what can I start doing today that will help?
