Jakob Ingebrigsten's 3:46.46 mile -- the fastest in the world since 2001 -- was the highlight as Keely Hodgkinson (1:57.71) won again and Alicia Monson ran 14:31.11 (#3 all-time US) in the 5,000.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen got his WR but Gudaf Tsegay was denied hers after an early fall. There were world leaders for Natoya Goule (1:58.46) in the 800, Grant Holloway (7.35) in the 60 hurdles, and Dawit Seyaum (8:23.24) in the 3k.

The meet will also feature a DMR with Jenny Simpson, Emma Coburn, Brenda Martinez and phenom hurdler Sydney McLaughlin. *Meet Home

Kipyegon broke the Kenyan record twice this year, won the Olympic title with ease and became just the second woman in history to break 3:57 three times in one year. Last year, Simpson's medal chances went up in smoke when her shoe came off in the WC final. This year, with her shoes on, she took bronze in Rio.

Dibaba showed off her speed by winning her semi with a 57 final lap as Faith Kipyegon won her heat and Sifan Hassan and Dawit Seyaum showed they will be contenders. Will Simpson, Rowbury and GB's Laura Muir be able to compete with the Africans in the final?

With Genzebe Dibaba in the 3,000, Hassan had the opportunity to shine and delivered a stellar last lap to hold off the 19-year-old Seyaum for gold. American Brenda Martinez was the top non-Ethiopian-born finisher in 5th.

Sifan Hassan and Dawit Seyaum, who went 3-4 at Worlds last year, are the favorites, but Martinez has been in good form this year and has a real shot at a medal.

Olympic silver medalist Gebremeskel dropped a world leading 7:38 in the 3K, while Seyaum ran 4:00 in the 1500. Sheila Reid won a competitive mile in 4:27.

There was no doubt who was the world #1 this year as Genzebe Dibaba had the greatest season ever for a women's 1500 runner. Jenny Simpson and Shannon Rowbury both auto qualified to Tuesday's final but they are going to have their hands full as the African-born runners are looking great.

Teammates Emma Coburn and Jenny Simpson will look at a minimum to mark themselves as favorites for Worlds. Could they also get American records in the process? Shannon Rowbury will look to become just the 5th woman in history to join the sub-2:00/sub-15:00 club.

12 of the 16 DL events (including all 4 mid-d/distance races) in Birmingham are the same as they were three days earlier in Rome, leading to several rematches, including Dawit Seyaum vs. Sifan Hassan over 1500 and Hagos Gebrhiwet vs. Thomas Longosiwa at 5,000. Also, Stephanie Garcia seems poised for a fast time in the women's steeple.
