Athing Mu is at Worlds
By Robert JohnsonNo Formal Confirmation She is Competing Yet
Update: Jonathan Gault has reported from Budapest on the latest news from Athing Mu here.
One of the biggest American storylines heading into the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which start tomorrow in Budapest, Hungary, is whether 800m Olympic and World champion Athing Mu would be competing. On August 2, the LA Times broke the story that her coach Bobby Kersee said she may not run Worlds even though she was healthy. The key quote from the piece was this one:
“It’s in our control if we decide we’re just going to go ahead and train through this year and focus on next year, then that’s what we’re going to do. The training is going well but our thought process, openly, is that we’re going to just train here in L.A. for the next two weeks and the next time she gets on the plane it’ll either be on vacation or to Budapest.”
Well, good news American track fans. Athing Mu is in Budapest. Earlier today, USATF communications chief Aarti Parekh confirmed to LetsRun.com’s Jonathan Gault that Mu is in Budapest. Now this doesn’t mean 100% that Mu is running. Parekh told us that she could not confirm 100% that Mu would be running, but added that she had seen nothing to indicate that Mu will not be competing.
