The 4 x mile world record attempt* at the Oregon Relays totally flopped last night as the ex-Duck All-Stars team of Matthew Centrowitz, Charlie Hunter, Sam Prakel and Johnny Gregorek only managed a 16:07.83, well off of the world’s best of 15:49.08, as only one team member broke 4:00.

The record attempt flopped at the very beginning. On the opening leg, one of the world’s best pacers Erik Sowinski was there to help get things started. He ran the first 400 meters in 57 high or 58 and then ran a 60. But after he stopped running, the pace really slowed. Two racers were running with Sowinski. Canadian Kieran Lumb who ran a 3:52 mile indoors for UW and then went pro, was running the opening leg for the OTC+1 team while Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz was running the opening for the Ex-Duck All-Stars. Lumb was in front when Sowinski dropped but slowed to a 62 meaning they were over 3:01 at 1209 meters. On the last 400 of the opening leg, Lumb barely broke 60 but he totally dropped Centrowitz. Lumb handed off in 4:01:56 with Centrowitz running 4:04.34.

Charlie Hunter ran 4:00.58 on the second leg and as the ex-Duck All-Stars still trailed. They got the lead on the third leg as Sam Prakel ran 3:59.46 before Johnny Gregorek closed things out with a 4:03.45.

Ex-Duck All-Stars Splits:
Matt Centrowitz
(4:04.34), Charlie Hunter (4:00.58), Sam Prakel (3:59.46) and Johnny Gregorek (4:03.45).

MB: Centro goes for WR, this Friday… What about UW and the Brooks Beasts?

There will be another 4 x mile next week at the Penn Relays where the studly milers from the University of Washington are entered.

*If the Ex-Duck All-Stars had broken the 15:49.08 mark it would have only been a world’s best, not a world record as to be a world record all team members need to be from the same country.
