Press Release
July 29, 2018

Charlevoix, MI – July 28, 2018 —  The 11th annual Ryan Shay Mile took place this morning in Charlevoix, Michigan under sunny skies and 70 degree temperatures.  This invitational road mile had separate races for men and women. There was $4000 in prize money available ($1000.00 1st place, $500.00 2nd, $250.00 3rd) with the title sponsor being Bergmann Marine.

In the first year of a bonus being offered for a course record Shannon Osika, in her 7th appearance, took advantage by posting a time of 4:20, beating Heather Kampf’s 2014 record of 4:21.  Nicole Sifuentes finished second in 4:22 followed by last year’s runner-up Katie Landwehr in 4:32. Jamie Morrissey was leading at the halfway mark with Sifuentes and Osika in tow. Before the three quarters mark Osika and Sifuentes pulled away with Sifuentes holding a slight lead. With about two hundred meters to go Osika made a strong move and never relinquished it.  This was Osika’s second win at the Ryan Shay Mile.

On the men’s side two runners finished under the four minute mark.  Sam Prakel was the first in 3:58 with Craig Nowak placing second also in 3:58.  The winner from the last three years, Jake Edwards, finished in third with a time of 4:00.  The leader through the half was Alejandro Garcia who finished fourth in 4:02. After the halfway mark a chase group of Prakel, Edwards, and Nowak started to close the gap on Garcia quickly.  Garcia was still leading down the hill, and then with two hundred and fifty meters to go the chase group caught and passed him. At that point Prakel asserted himself and lead all the way to the finish.

The Ryan Shay Mile started in the summer of 2008 to honor the memory of Ryan Shay.  Ryan passed away on November 3, 2007 while competing in the 2008 USA Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City.  Ryan was from Central Lake, Michigan, about thirty minutes south of Charlevoix. A talented runner, who through hard work and persistence, won championships in high school, while in college in Notre Dame, and as a professional.  Ryan continues to be a role model for many young people in Northern Michigan and around the country.
