New Mexico’s Josh Kerr Runs 3:35.01 to Break NCAA 1500m Record

The University of New Mexico’s Josh Kerr showed he’s the best miler in the NCAAs as he blasted the field in the 1500 at the Bryan Clay Invite to win by over a second in 3:35.01 and break Sydney Maree’s 3:35.30 which was the mark recognized by Track and Field News and the USTFCCCA as the collegiate record.

NCAA XC champ Justyn Knight was second in 3:36.07 (Knight’s previous best 3:39.23 from 2016, Kerr’s previous best was 3:35.99 from last year).

As dominant and impressive as Kerr’s performance was he still has a way to go to become the fastest collegian 1500m runner of all-time*, who we believe to be Jim Ryun, who ran 3:33.1 for 1500 in the summer after his sophomore year 51 years ago in 1967. (Bernard Lagat ran 3:30.56 the summer after his senior year). The marks recognized by USTFCCCA and Track and Field News as collegiate records are the fastest marks run during a collegiate season.
