Prize Money Significantly Increased For March 2018 Armory NYC Indoor Marathon At The Armory

NEW YORK, September 26, 2017 – The Armory Foundation has announced its 2018 Armory NYC Indoor Marathon Presented by New York Road Runners will have a considerably increased purse for the March 16-18 event.

“We have witnessed both men’s and women’s world records during the first two years of the Indoor Marathon at The Armory,” said Armory NYC Indoor Marathon Meet Director Aaron Robison. “The increased purse for 2018 will provide extra incentive. Word is getting out to long distance runners worldwide that we’re developing something special and unique here.”

The 2018 men and women’s winner of the World Record Challenge each will receive $3,000 (plus a $4,000 bonus for anyone who establishes a world record), while runner-up and third-place finisher earn $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. Further, the 2018 NYC Indoor Marathon includes an added financial incentive of a $1,000 bonus for anyone who runs under the 2017 respective men’s and women’s world record.

Last March, both men’s and women’s world record were broken during the 2nd NYC Indoor Marathon at The Armory. Christopher Zablocki from Essex, Connecticut, was buoyed by a strong and electrifying finish to a 2:21:48 to surpass Malcolm Richards’ mark of 2:21:56 set at The Armory in 2016.

Laura Manninen, of Espoo, Finland, overtook New York City’s Kate Pallardy with 40 laps to go en route to a 2:42:30 to establish the new women’s indoor marathon world record. Her time eclipsed New York’s Allie Kieffer’s 2:44:44 set during the inaugural Armory NYC Indoor Marathon.

Last March more than 100 relay teams – each team consisting up to eight runners – participated. Relay teams will compete for prize money, including $1,000 for fastest male, female and co-ed teams and a $1,000 bonus for any team that runs less than 2 hours.

“Last March we more than tripled our number of team entrants from our inaugural year,” Armory Foundation Co-President Jonathan Schindel said. “The Armory Foundation couldn’t be happier with the positive direction of the Team Relay, camaraderie among runners and significant benefits to our Armory College Prep program. We are focused to continue the momentum and make this a ‘must-enter’ event every spring for runners of all levels.”
