Men’s Highlights: Bosnia’s Tuka Amel won the 800 in 1:45.80 while Erik Sowinski finished 5th in 1:46.95. Asafa Powell took the 100m easily in 9.87 and Kenya’s Kangogo Cornelius won the 3000 in 7:47.
Women’s Highlights: Germany’s Fabienne Kohlamann got an upset victory in the 800 running 1:58.37 to win over Molly Huddle (1:59.05) and Switzerland’s Selina Buchel (1:59.23). The 25-year-old Kohlamann had just broken 2-minutes for the first time less than 2-weeks ago when she ran 1:59.54 to finish 3rd at the World University Games. That race marked a big break through for her as she had been stuck at 2:00.72 since 2010 (and that race in 2010 was the only time she’d been under 2:01). Today was her first race since WUG and she dropped her PR by more than another second. An IAAF article says Kohlmann’s time is the fastest by a German since 2000 and that she was formerly a 400 hurdler. Behind the top 3, Gabrielle Grunewald was 5th in 2:01.23.
In sprint action, Jasmine Stowers took the 100H in 12.62, just beating out Lolo Jones (12.65). Tianna Bartoletta won the 100 in 11.07 after having run a previous round of the 100 in 11.07 (Lolo Jones ran that one too and was 11.30). In field action, World champ Christina Obergföll was top in the javelin with 61.71m.
