That's a great story. So despite being in the bottom 1% of talents, you were eager to learn more about training and running and later went on to help more talented runners achieve what you couldn't.
It also makes you more realistic as a coach - you know how much influence talent has on how fast someone can become, which is important to know since some coaches/HS kids think they can be just about as fast as they want and train ridiculously hard only to get super disappointed or injured through the way.
Bottom 1%? You've never been near a distance race in your life, have you?
The runners at the local 5k's don't train for 8 year seriously with decent/high mileage, workouts and optimized life for running. So the times range from 15-35 minutes. Some of them, despite not training run sub 20. So yea, training hard for 8 years, optimizing life for running and doing workouts and running each day and finally breaking 20 after 9 years of this training (as a guy) probably qualifies for the bottom 1% talent-wise.
Most people never have the dedication to train hard for 8 years, but if they did, they could probably run sub 20 after just 5 years or something of solid training.
