We still live in a democracy. Public health experts do not dictate how we live. Besides, there's disagreement, look at Sweden for example. The Swedish policy is in fact guided by public health experts.
It's unfortunate that this became another partisan issue in the US. It shouldn't be. For example, millions of people will starve in developing countries because of the lockdown policies and collapsing exports. I'd think liberals and left-wingers should care about that.
We're in the middle of a pandemic and you don't want to listen the advice of public health experts because... we're a democracy? What?
What exactly do you think Sweden is proving right now? Their COVID death rate is significantly higher than any of their neighbors and... their economy is declining at the exact same rate anyway! This is what Republicans can't seem to comprehend. Just because you slap an "open" sign on a movie theatre doesn't mean people are going to risk their health to go to the movies.
There is no economic reopening without dealing with the virus. Again, Trump is actively refusing to do this! If you really cared about the economy, you'd be demanding that Trump do his damn job instead of dodging responsibility and demanding praise at every turn.
So I get that you don't think CA or anywhere in US should have ever locked down, but what about China? Do you think they should have done nothing and just let covid spread to limit the damage to their economy?
I thought the point on the "safer at home" orders was to lessen the flood of people to the hospitals? With the exception of a handful of cities most hospitals are now losing money and laying off workers. Those heading to the beach are most likely not carriers of the virus, so what's the problem? Don't we need to get more people infected? I understand the old and ill should avoid it if at all possible, but young, healthy people at a beach is a bad thing?

Because the Democrat states have more lockdowns and restrictions.
The total populations in the chart were almost the same, and the slight difference was accounted for in the final percentages.
What is the world coming to when Elon Musk is the SANE one???
The people who are dying did not listen to the health experts over the last 50 years. They smoked and drank and ate bad food. They were able to do that because we are a democracy (free society). Funny that when the chickens come home to roost, everyone is expected to suffer. These people have always driven up insurance costs for healthy people and they now are ruining our lives.
Actually the beach is exactly the place people should be going! Look at NYC—Queens is the hardest hit. Tiny, dark apartments. Once the lockdown was enforced, many of those people were NEVER getting sunlight.

Possibly. But also the democratic states are more population dense. And democratic states tend to have their poor all living in close quarters in big cities. This virus is primarily killing very very old people in nursing homes, and working poor people in inner cities. Those two groups are the most likely to be in poor health prior to contacting the virus. Oh, and the working poor are also most likely to be hammered by the economic impacts of the shutdowns too. This virus is absolutely exposing the wealth disparity in our country.
I just love that the whole argument is about money.
The Pandemic accelerates exponentially because all you have to do is breathe near someone who doesn't know them self they have it
People are literally dying but we need to end social distancing so that... money
You have a handful or armed protestors mobilized by... money, then you have a bunch of money grubbers complaining because... money
I'm hoping the soft reopen of some states ends by the end of May. By then the second wave will have hit all of these states that opened up and we should (hopefully) see less of this crap show playing out.

Hear hear. Musk for president!! It'll take someone like Musk to bring some sense to the world. Fire Fauci and the rest of the liars. Remove the fed from power. Introduce a new free, transparent economic system. Bring jobs back to America. Bring back innovation.
1/10.
Nice try but putting "Musk for president" and "transparent economic system" in the same paragraph made it too obvious.
You left out the timeline.
Flu season runs approximately from Nov-March (5 months) and is less aggressive and longer in duration. Also, your attached 2019 data does not include Flu deaths attributed to pneumonia or any other underlying health issues. Covid-19 is much more aggressive and concentrated and has no viable vaccine. It hits really hard in a short period of time. If you were to allow Covid-19 to run its course for 5 months like our normal seasonal Flu with the same treatment the fatality numbers would be off the charts.
The Sh^t is real.......wake up!!!!

Why are more people dying in Democrat states?
Because they are more densely populated.
Why are they more densely populated?
Because there are more jobs.
Its called cooking the books. You look further look at the political spectrum of the governors. For example Newsome is more moderate the many of the others and California's death rate is closer to a lot of the Republican lead states. Not to say cooking the books is not happening on both sides but New York's numbers stick out like a sore thumb.
The imaginary covid1984 virus is obviously MUCH less aggressive compared to the seasonal flu / influenza, which also has never had an effective vaccine, even with all the over estimations of the covid1984 fatality rates.
There has been absolutely NO reason to lockdown California, nor any other part of the country.
In addition, the lockdowns, mask and social distancing requirements have the effect of LOWERING people's immunities to viruses. The unconstitutional lockdowns need to be stopped immediately!
Newsom is a fascist dictator! He is not a moderate.

Ok, he's the Franco of fascist dictators then, and therefore so moderate that the Allies never bother going to war with him, or him with them.
Elon Musk? The same Elon Musk who knocked 10 percent of his company's value with an unhinged rant today?
He is unstable and this topic is outside his sweet spot. Best to ignore him.
I know I am late to the party but somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 of US fatalities were nursing home residents. The lockdown did not and will not protect this group. The only way to protect people in care homes is to 100 percent test every nursing home employee. That isn’t going to happen for many reasons.
When the social distancing movement started the slogan was “two weeks to flatten the curve” . It’s been six now since lockdowns went into effect in California and New York.
Now what?

Or is he just brilliant? Smoke a joint post it online, then buy back your stock at a discount.
But seriously Tesla stock is way overvalued. The stock market has them valued above Ford. What's more likely in the next 20 years:
A) Tesla becomes more profitable than Ford
B) Tesla goes Bankrupt
Clearly B. Most likely scenario is they top out at a level around 1/20th to 1/10th the volume of Ford. But the stock market doesn't reflect real value.
Musk can't be president, he's not from the US.
Newsom SHOULD be US president. All you who think he's a disaster apparently don't realize who we have as president right now.
Oh, and per capita, Iowa is as bad off as California right now. That's all you hear about the news, isn't it?
