I think we all know now that Webb's career is following a somewhat unorthodox path. Forget about normal rules and tactics when following his career. Some may be disappointed by his showing this week, but I think he will bounce back and do something pretty amazing. For one thing in a single mile race with no heats and little tactical planning Webb is absolutely deadly. His 3:48 prove this point quite clearly. Remember most American milers don't peak until their mid-twenties. When Webb matures I see no reason why Scott's AR record won't fall. In fact I think he has the rare strength to run times that the Great British milers did in the early 80's. When Webb finally runs a 3:46 I am sure his critics will be scratching their head, but I want be surprised at all. Folks despite some tactical misgivings and inexperience we are looking at a miler with Coe-like talent here.
I am willing to bet with anyone that Webb will be a 3:46-3:47 miler by the next Olympics. However, I agree he may need at stronger 800-meter base.
