show up
simple stay on the team and show up to practices and meets and run in them, didnt matter how fast you run or if you missed a few here and there even without a legitimate excuse, i thought it would be impossible not to letter, season ending injury aside, but amazingly my team and two people manage not to letter one year, quite a feet by my standards, much harder than lettering at my school
For large schools (teams with JV and freshman XC, etc) it could be just being on the varsity team or being top 7.

When you need bleachers to take a picture of your XC team you've got a large team.
Alan
are we talking high school or college here?
Who cares?
Years ago, when I ran, you only lettered if you were top 7, period. But only the serious ran, and the team was small. In recent years, now that we have girls, middle schoolers, and lots more kids, we letter all juniors and seniors (by the logic that if they sat the bench in varsity football they'd letter there, too), plus any younger kids who run top 7. The "top 7" is usually for half or more of races run, but with some wiggle room for coaches' discretion. So a freshman who is usually #8 or 9 but gets to run 7th a few times has a shot.
Talking high school...don't want to make it to EZ or dilute what a letter means, but also not to hard---& I'd like to reward those who ran over the summer &/or went to camp
thanks for all ya'lls imput
