One thing I've been wondering about is when they talk about the number of ICU beds and ventilators "available" in the US, that just means how many we have total, right? Not the number that are currently sitting empty?
I assume that's a fairly important distinction. If you say we have 100k ICU beds and ventilators in the nation, but 75% of them are already in use on a regular basis, then we really only have 25k "spares". My guess is that most hospitals are designed to run over 50% of their capacity all the time. It doesn't take a huge influx of new patients to put a hospital above their capacity.
Tell me if my assumptions are wrong. Just curious.
