Why is the world making such a big deal out of something that's killed fewer people than the seasonal flu?

Do some Google searching on that, and get back to us with your best guess. Oh, wait, you already did, you think it is just political. You a Russian bot proxy?
Hardly political.
Japan just closed down it's entire school system nation wide. That is nothing short of a war time measure.
The virus I don't think is being taken seriously enough, sure if you are young and healthy you'll probably be fine.
But 2-3 % with a high transmission rate. It's like 20X deadlier than the 1918 flu that killed like 50 million people in two years.
Nothing to scoff at.

I saw "novel" for the first time today in describing the virus. I am guessing it is used to distinguish it from previously known versions.
Also, the mortality rate is 20x that of the seasonal flu; that is based on reported cases so it could be different. (2% v 0.1%).
"Novel" is what makes it interesting. It's New!!! Good marketing.
New and improved.
