Sonya Richards Ross talks about doing 1000 reps of abs per day (not all sit ups).
She did OK.
An extremely strong core is necessary to sprint well. Besides those on here who strive to Boston Qualify or race ultras, everyone else on here should want to sprint fast.
I used to do around 300-500 sit ups per day. No effect on distance running. I benefited more from using that time to get in more mileage or doing planks. Sit ups are one of the least effective core exercises you can do.
Nothing

It wouldn't do anything.
You could do 5 sets of 5 on the ab machine with the heaviest weight you can handle and that's going to be more effective than 1000.
Quality over quantity.
Well - on balance it'll probably help. But it's a question of whether it's an effective way to use the time. Most strength training works on the basis of rather few reps, and you increase the load over time as you get stronger.
Many things are better than nothing. But the correct comparison isn't with nothing, it's with alternative ways of training.
