ferris sulfate elixer is one of the names of liquid iron supplements. take it with orange juice, it tastes horrible but it helps to absorb it.
i can't believe only one person has mentioned taking vitamin C with iron. to make use of iron, your body needs plenty of vitamin c, vitamin e (and thus selenium), b6, b12, zinc, and folic acid. one of the reasons people say you NEED red meat is because red meat is a good source of b6, b12, and zinc (and iron of course). the fact is you don't NEED red meat. but you do need those other nutrients for your body to increase the iron in your blood.
taking large quantities of ONE nutrient is never a good idea. your body isn't a simple machine and doesn't just need more of ingredient X, it needs X along with Y and Z and many others.
taking large doses of iron is not a good idea, either, even if you are anemic. large is anything over 100mg per day. iron is one of the few nutrients you really can O.D. on and cause serious, long term problems.
btw, if your doctor didn't tell you how much iron to take, he is an idiot.
I used to get iron shots when my iron was that low- it works a lot faster without having to go through your stomach-ask your doc. They do hurt quite a bit though, but for most runners, pain is not a problem.
ALso, don't drink any tea as the tannins in tea will prohibit iron absorption.
alright guys...where can i find the feosol liquid version or the ferrous sulfate elixir? my wlagreen's does not carry liquid iron. thanks.
also, am i being stupid by not getting simple iron shot or an iron drip IV? are those truly better than taking iron supplements?
I walked right into a local pharmacy and bought a bottle of ferrous sulfate elixir. $7 for a pint. Maybe try a smaller mom & pop type place.
You can obviously get healthy again if you do not get a shot or IV. These are simply alternative ways to get healthier. They will get you better much faster and if you dont have a lot of time they are your best bet. If you simply dont have the resources to get those treatments Ferous sulfate elixer taken with Vitamin C will still help you substantially. I dont think you have to be as cautious as people are saying. You certainly can get iron poisening but from what ive heard it takes and extreme overdose of Iron for that to happen. If people have had bad experiences with taking too much iron please speak up... If you are taking 2-300 mg a day and are feeling sick than you are taking too much. Make sure you spread the dosage out over the entire day and it always helps to take with or after eating food.
I just ordered a bottle of the elixir from Walgreen's. They don't have it on the shelves, so you have to order it at the pharmacy like you would a prescription. You don't need a prescription, though, it's over the counter.
bloodwork--check out the link on page one of this thread. You can order the ferrous sulfate elixir online at that link.
I wanted the best iron out there so I talked to a CTS coach. He said there are three types of iron: ferric, ferrous, and iron chelate.
Ferric: cannot be absorbed by humans yet people sell it anyway because it's cheap to manufacture
Ferrous: Better, but you're still not going to absorb all of it.
Iron Chelate: The most easily absorbed
Then I checked around for chelate and found it in GNC. Hope this helps. Can anyone else (who's not a moron) comment on the advice I received from CTS?
woah...that goes against everything i've ever ead on the internet, here, and have ever been told. can anyone back that up? and thanks for the walgreens info!
don't take your iron supplements at the same time that you drink milk or eat any other dairy products. calcium tends to prevent iron absorption, so while it's still important to be getting plenty of dairy products, etc., try timing your calcium intake so that it doesn't interfere with your iron supplements, which seem to be more of a priority right now.
stay tough and good luck this season!
