I just got word today that what I feared was a case of dead legs or over-training was actually anemia. My ferritin was at an extremely low 6 (below 20 is low and anything up to 322 is recommended with 50 being about optimal I think). My iron was at 18 and below 42 is low (imbetween 42 and 165 is recommended). My hemoglobin was slightly low with my hematocrit on the lower end of the recommended scale. Now, I know James Strang of TN had this his senior year entering x-c and over-came it well to make FL....does anyone have advice on how to recover asap other than taking iron pills and eating red meat? Any input on what to do to recover well would be greatly appreciated. We still have a few weeks to the first meet so it should be alright, but after 4 great high mileage weeks of training, the last two have completely sucked and been sorta wasteful and low. I know it takes a few weeks to get back to full strength but I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on the condition and the recovery process. I hope to get at least some good training in during the recovery time...Thanks in advance.
I've never been a big meat-eater but will definitely become one now. What other foods have lots of iron in them. ALSO, my physician didn't specify how many iron pills to take daily, so how many Feosol iron pills should I be taking nightly with my OJ (Vitamin C). The pills are 45 mg I believe. Keep in mind my ferritin is really low.
Lastly, I'm just happy to know I wasn't fighting stalenss and severe over-training. The last two weeks were tough as I had to walk some embarassingly at a mountain running camp and haven't been able to stay with our number 2 and 3 runners. My quads were dying but I was able to have a good workout today after I found out about my condition. My quads were fatigued but I guess I was excited to finally know what was wrong. Now I just need some advice on what to do now? I want to keep training while recovering and feel like I can...I was thinking 3 of the iron pills daily plus lots of red meat, or should I be taking liquid iron (my Dr. didn't specify) or more iron pills? What else could I be doing? Thanks a lot in advance.
