I noticed many amateur marathon runners run almost year round the weekly mileage. They might decrease the mileage a bit before the race and after the race, but in general, they have a very short recovery phase and you can see them lining up to a half marathon right after a month, back on the same extreme weekly mileage. When I checked Kipchoge’s diary I noticed after a marathon he has a few days of slow jogging and then three weeks of total rest! That means for the first month of recovery almost zero mileage! Have you ever seen an amateur runner takes three weeks off?
Then Kipchoge has about two months of low mileage of about 60 km a week with only three days of running in a week. Amateur runners run everyday. Only then, three months before the next race does Kipchoge starts building up into the heavy mileage and high paces. So this might be a reason why many amateur runners here have so many injuries- they are constantly on the most demanding phase. They never have a real recovery phase.
