An Olympic medal still has prestige. Winning one for your country means something, even if it's a more obscure event. Maybe not for Kipchoge, but if you are a 2:06 Kenyan/Ethiopian that won't make the marathon team why not try the 100k and go for a gold medal?
Making ultras an Olympic event would attract a lot more talent into the sport, including in the US.
