Ewert is very tough. Finishes 3rd at the Regional and then comes back to finish 2nd at Nationals (obviously no Dudek, though). She steps up in big moments and has had 3 straight solid performances at National XC meets. I'm interested to see how she does at Foot Locker.
Completely agree with this....I expected Ewert to be near the top, but she was awesome today!
Thorvaldson was as advertised....great runner, great heart.
And whats wrong with these morons trying to bring Tuohy down. She fought through and won during a brutal race...that's the sign of champion. Good on her!!

Man, I wish Brynn didn't get injured and we could have saw her peak fitness level at this race. I don't know if she would have been top 4, but I'm certain she would have been battling at least in that 5-9 group.
I actually think Brynn was the girl who fell down early on in the race.
With Saratoga vs FM this year, Saratoga's team has a closer spread and that is much more beneficial in a race like NXN compared to the State or Regionals.
Was it really her?
I missed it, but I heard them mentioning it

Is Ewert also running Real Nationals? I hope so. She'd be my pick to win.
She qualified so should be there. Wouldn't be surprised to see the top 4 Mid West girls be in the top 10. Though don't know what's up with Hart.

Weak excuses.
She's a mega-mileage obsessive runner on the verge of a permanent burn-out. I don't expect to see her a year from now.
Course conditions can be the great equalizer. Look at Boston a couple years ago. Do you really think Des Linden and Sarah Sellers would have gone 1-2 if normal Boston conditions existed. The course allowed for a close race. Big props to the girls who almost caught Tuohy, but she still prevailed.
Ewert is running Footlocker. I wonder if Tuohy will win another Gatorade award. If Dudek, Masciarelli, Vanderkooi, or another runner who didn't race at NXN beats Ewert by more than .6 seconds, it seems that they would be the Gatorade award winner.

Remember: Tuohy is preparing for the Olympic trials. Sure, she wanted to 3-peat, but qualifying for the Olympic trials and running her best there is much more important. She might not even be in peak shape today. Also it is surprising that Ewert and Thorvaldson were able to catch up to her, but I'm not surprised that she was able to kick. She has 2:09 800 speed. Maybe if she had stopped looking back it wouldn't have been as close
Ridiculous, it's not like she ran a workout the day before and trained through this.

Tuohy's win obviously wasn't as dominant as years past, but she still impressed me a lot today. She's used to blowing everyone away in XC. When someone like that finally gets challenged, you don't know how they're going to respond. Some would hang their heads and pack it in. Tuohy fought like hell and ran like a champion.
Totally agree -- this actually makes me more confident in her future than if she had gone out and won by 20-30 seconds again. Showed a lot of mental toughness and resolve.

7th, wow. Bad day
The question is, what happens if Ewert wins it? 1st and 2nd place finishes at the 2 National meets might mean more than a .6 win at the one. I'm a big fan of Tuohy, but I'm simply asking. I feel they may give it Tuohy irregardless.

She probably didn't, but her coach is the one training her and obviously her coach has greater goals for her than only NXN. It's quite possible that she didn't reach the same level of training that she had last year when she ran 16:06 for 5k because he wants no risk of her being injured. Don't be surprised if she runs the 15:10 standard during the track season and qualifies for the Trials
Saratoga = no Chmiel, no seniors, no juniors, and 3 sophomores!
And win by almost 100 points! Who would have guessed!
Yes, many girls do peak at the age they currently are, but we’ll see how it shakes out for them the next couple of years.
Does anyone know what the speed ratings would be with these conditions? That is what I am wondering?

Chmiel is one of the few who from Saratoga who had a strong career throughout though. The program has a history of their Varsity being 8th graders and freshmen.

Yep. Showed tremendous guts down the stretch. Many in similar situations have folded the tent.
Still, I'm very surprised they managed to make it that close.
Almost seems like Saratoga is becoming the new FM.
Ella Kurto didn’t do bad herself, finishing 14th.

It probably depends on the margins. If Ewert goes and beats Starliper by 20+ seconds (16.8 second gap today) and runs well under 17, they might consider it. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. They might also use NY runner Karrie Baloga as a reference point to measure performances at Footlocker against Tuohy's performances throughout the year.
Tori Gaitan, Great Oaks 7th in 151th place

Even if someone beats Ewert by a greater margin than Tuohy at Footlocker, I still think today's performance merits enough credit for Tuohy to win the award again. She completed yet another undefeated season, which no one has ever done before at this level... 3 straight years of being undefeated and winning NXN. Even if this single one race wasn't as dominant as her past performances, her season as a whole was capped off marvelously and in style. She earned it!
Guys of course Katelyn Tuohy is winning the runner of the year!
She went undefeated and one nxn and won all of the Races by huge margins
Sydney masciarelli has already lost twice
Taylor ewert has lost twice
Katelyn Tuohy just beat starliper
Obviously she's the runner of the year. They're not going to go buy any sort of time comparison on One race they're going to go by whose resumes the best for the whole year
She has all the top speed ratings and she just won incredibly tough race. Obviously she's the runner of the year
