Let me change the headline- "2:36 marathon runner decides she won't be a factor in the Olympic trials, instead she'll take her 31:55 talent to the 10k"

Exactly. So instead of her placing 20th-30th at the olympic trials marathon, she'll now place 8th in the olympic trials 10k. If she can return to her sub 32 fitness in time to qualify.

Her 5K is more impressive than any of her other PRs, she should just stick to 5K
Does this mean I have to admit Scorpion Runner was right? :>(
This is the right decision and was clear in advance. She can be very good at the 5000m, and with her build, I believe that her best distance is actually the 1500m.
I said this last year and probably said it when she announced for the marathon as well because it was clear to everyone but her:

While she may still figure out the marathon distance, she is built for the 1500m and has so far run best at the 5000m.
10000m may be too far. That 15:15 was very solid for brief training with BTC. Go all the way in on the 1500m/5000m or even steeple, given her height. If she has no speed, then 15's out, of course. But it's the track if she wants to make the Olympic team, and if she wants gold, it's back to the Tri. I give her an A+ for moving from the absolute pinnacle of the triathlon, a very lucrative sport for her, to the marathon for the challenge but the writing's on the wall here.

Yeah. Same.
She should have just straight up retired after the triathlon.
All this other stuff has been obnoxious.
Glad she’s being more realistic and actually attacking her strengths. I gained a little respect back for her by her realizing the timeline of this didn’t make sense anymore.
What about winning the Olympic Marathon Gold Medal?
It's better to burn out, than fade away.
she chose a long time ago to focus on the tri and not running. Now it is too late. She is still going to be "good" on the track but not a factor in medalling or even top 3 placement at nationals
She should have gone Ironman and Ironman 70.3. She could have been a femal Jan Frodeno now. She would have won Hawaii this year. SAD!
I don't get why it's so fun to hate on someone's dreams/aspirations and then misfortune. Gwen is a fantastic triathlete and runner. Her sweet spot in running does seem to be the 5k/10k. The 1500 and marathon are both loaded. She's definitely a contender for the 5k or 10k team. Gonna be tough for Bowerman with Infeld and Hall also going for the 10k. If Huddle or Sisson doesn't make the marathon team, the 10k will be an even tougher team to make. This adds another fun story heading into this summer. I'm gonna choose to be excited for her.
I also have some respect that she recognized this before the trials. It's tough to give up on a dream you made public, even if it was a very lofty goal.
With her injury history, it seems like shorter distances will suit her better. Doubtful that she could build up mileage enough to be at Shalane's level. Overuse injuries in tri are much easier to avoid and manage.
Letsrun doesn't like outspoken women who dream big. Simple as that.
