Nothing crazy. Mainly a bunch of long intervals, mile repeats and tempos as workouts. Shortest was really 800s for most of the season. Barely touched anything shorter than 800s the last few weeks. Cool to look at. Thanks for sharing. The more I look at top athlete's training logs the more I realize it's not rocket science and there is nothing special that they do. In a way, this training log looks very uncreative and not unique. I think this proves we need to stop going crazy on who is doing what and just put in consistent training blocks year after year instead of trying to find the next best thing since there isn't one.
What is the source of this?

Thanks for sharing,
It is interesting reading his blog post from the champs. Eg. "From 2k/3k felt like garbage, then from 3k-8k still felt like garbage. This from the person who was 3rd individually says a lot for the grit of not only him, his team, but for all those that ran.

So true. I had a friend who was pretty darn fast (though not quite Mantz fast). We were talking about his training past one day, and he was going over all the different coaches and philosophies he'd tried over his decades of running. He said no matter what, his best races always came after the times he could get at least 9 months of unbroken training in. Didn't matter what he did as far as workouts and progressions or whatever. At least 9 solid months of running got him into amazing shape.
Anyways, the interesting thing to me in Mantz's log is how many weeks in there he just does one serious workout. Some of those weeks have a race, but not all of them.

No doubt. It’s much better to be a miserable cynic a$$hole like you.
Looks a simple recipe...
Weekly long run of 18-20 miles
A workout is some form of long tempo
Double 5 days a week
Strides
Keep volume up even around championship races
How fast is the regular miles?
How fast is the long run? I would guess a decent clip since it’s isolated from workouts.
24 of their guys have their gps logs up for anyone to look through

Probably not as fast as you think. It looks like most long runs are in the mid to high 6's. Regular 10-12 milers are around low 7's. Their 5 mile double runs are at 8 minute pace.

Very similar to NAU’s training. Runs are slower for NAU because they’re at a bit higher altitude. Their long run is also pretty slow, but quite long. Top guys will run up to 2.5 hours.
Sample BYU XC training week:
Monday: eat stewed prunes with your companions at the old folks home
aqua aerobics
Tuesday: watch Golden Girls
mall walking
Wednesday: yell at neighbor kids to get off the lawn
take a nap
Thursday: have birthday party for 25 year old freshman
wash magic underwear and snitch on your companion
Friday: watch Lawrence Welk while eating lime jello
checkup at the geriatrician
Saturday: watch Matlock
chase your grandkids around the common room
Sunday: six hours of church service followed by six hours of Sunday school
ice cream social
