I don't let anything go. It's a running board. Answer the question or screw off.
Looks like the actual conversation about Dave Scott-Thomas's firing is now taking place over on Trackie.
Disheartening that so many people defended him over the years when others came forward with evidence of misconduct and scandals.
Yep, double coverups, and organizational PR
You sure know how to pick ‘em, fred.
Sure you didn’t get that Psych degree out of a Cracker Jack box?
I'm a reporter in Guelph trying to shake some things loose regarding this story. I'm not at all familiar with the running world, and could use a guide/historian. If anyone wants to help, shoot me an email: jduncan(at)guelphmercurytribune.com
The history of running is that people use to do blood packing way back, but somewhere around 1985 they started taking EPO, and revolutionized the sport.
The story in this thread is that the above mentioned Canadian athletes are clean and have to compete with a handicap on the world scene. If you look at the 800 meter females coming out of the eastern bloc they were all juiced.
Agree, it’s not an easy job; but it has it’s material rewards & responsibilities & the ends don’t justify the means.
If you're looking for context on the club, this is probably a good place to start, esp. episode 1.

Definitely a good start, but you will search in vain in the rest of the series for any follow-up on the "controversy courted" or "detraction" referenced in these first 4 mins. And now we're beginning to learn exactly why DST was so acutely allergic to critical scrutiny of any kind.
Thank you! I'll take a peek here.
He coached me.

He was called a liar by the University when they discovered that he had repeatedly lied about a very serious matter back in 2006.
The Canadian running community was well aware of a series of scandals and sketchy behaviour by Speed River leadership, but many people ignored the pattern as insignificant or even defended Dave. When shown repeatedly that this was a bad character, supporters sometimes lied to defend him. That's the culture that was created in Guelph and some of those people are still around and still involved in the program.
People are making presumptions that that the incident was widely known and covered up. There is no actual evidence of this. The scene in Guelph has been amazing for so many people, and Dave worked tirelessly to support athletes and this community. If it turns out that things went south with a particular athlete, then that is very unfortunate, but that in itself doesnt create a continuing culture of abuse and cover-up - sounds like an isolated incident and then a pattern of damn good coaching afterwards from everyone involved in coaching scene in Guelph. People are making this into more than it is.
You need to go back through all the message board threads about Speed River over the past decade and learn about what you've been missing. There has been a pattern of issues that have been made publicly known. While they are separate matters from what got DST fired, they showed the Canadian running community, or at least those willing to listen, that Speed River leadership was underhanded and untrustworthy. I'd suggest you start with the Canadian XC bid scandal and go from there.
How many people knew he was suspended for a month? How many of those who knew about the suspension also knew the reason was for the suspension? And, as a side note, I'd be curious to know when the suspension actually occurred and what his workflow looked like during that period. Presumably it couldn't have been between September and April without people being aware of what was going on. Did he go incommunicado for the month of August or something? Did UG tell SR about the incident? Since DST worked so tirelessly for so many athletes and the community, with how many athletes are things allowed to "go south" before he's actually forced to be accountable? (Note that I don't actually know this is what happened--you seem to think so, though, as do others here.) If he had, say, an inappropriate relationship with a student-athlete, lied about it, with who knows what consequences for the student-athlete, and continued to win coach of the year honours, he's golden, right?

I am well aware of the bid scandals and petty politics that goes into this kind of thing. My life has been in sport and the "bid scandal" was hardly a scandal. You have to be kidding me. You complained, Guelph stood down and you got your championship - move on. And yes I am well aware that in the years following the alleged incident that some athletes in the program at U of G may not have liked the program and if asked by an investigator about their experiences at Guelph they would complain - nothing scandalous of course - they didnt like his decisions - again so what - I coached and I know that not every athlete I have coached would have only good things to say about me. So the University let Dave go cause it appears he may not have been truthful back in 2006. Okay fine - but that does not discount the unbelievable effort and time he has given to athletes over the past 15 years. He was a fantastic coach and created an amazing running community out of nothing. He impacted 100's of athletes in positive ways and there was and is no pattern of continued negative behaviour - just normal machinations of running a world class club.
