I cannot believe anyone did not have the balls to run. Has Arkansas really become the team we should all put on a pedestal that no one should ever attempt to challenge them? I am very disappointed. I expected more from that field, it really should have been a great race.

OK new rule, if you don't break 4:00 in a championship race then there will be no "national champion." This is pathetic.
Fellow mavens, the races aren't run to please the 'fans in the stands'. Championship races come unscripted, w/out pacers, w/nerves on end and they unravel the way they will.
Use whatever terms you want to describe your feelings but that ain't gonna change things. Call it winning ugly, but a win is a win and Ark counts the points.
This 'argument' came up after Ryan Shay won the US Marathon Champs last month and especially after the USATF men's 1500m. There doesn't seem any pleasing some of you.
I just think it was an injustice to the fans because no one wanted to run. If I were in their place I would not have taken it out in 2:10, that's just plain embarassing. What did they really want, a kicker's race? Is that what the mile is really about?

The men's World Indoor Champs 1500m final went out in 2:06 and finished in 3:42. As I said above, Champ races are different from all others. Time is not as material as place.

the goal is to win the championship i agree. the question i have is why does everone in the final believe they have the ultimate kick. to sit and kick you must have ultimate confidence in your closing speed. i can't believe everyone in the final truly believed they had they had that speed for the end. if you do not have the kick why sit and wait with the pack.

Luckily you are far better than any of them and decided to give the rest of them a chance to win a championship by sitting this one out. Too bad they screwed it up and you'll never give anyone else a chance to win the NCAA championship ever again. They should really all be taken out back and shot for screwing it up for the rest of us that wanted that same chance. I've only got a couple of handguns and one hunting rifle, but if we pool our resources from the board i'm sure we can get enough people together with enough guns to handle all 11 of them with ease

That's one of many reasons why you're *not* in their place: because you have no understanding of how to win races.
As for the question about why everybody is content to let it be a kicker's race -- it's because everybody there *does* believe they can win it in the kick. If you're a world-class miler, you believe that, if everything's clicking, you can close faster than anybody. If you don't believe that, you move up. Some of them may accept that they can't run 3:26.00, but all of them believe they can close in 38 off a decent pace. And they're right: they all can close in 38 -- it's only a fraction of a second which separates the winner from the also-ran.
Every race can only have one winner, so there will always be the guy who comes 6th half a second behind the winner. He might have only had a 20% chance of medalling off a kick, but he had a 0.01% chance of medalling by leading. It's frustrating to watch someone finish as an also-ran in major finals over and over again -- but at the end of the day, it's because Hicham et al are faster than him. Running from the front, while it might impress a bunch of message-board armchair critics, does nothing to help his chances of placing well.

The rest of them were not strong or fast enough to keep up the pace to get first.
The NCAA Championship record was set in a tactical race. They went through the half in 2:03. You just go where the race takes you, and let the kicks fall where they may. I am sorry, but not many championship miles are won in the first 800m.

Some of the posts on here are just plain ridiculous... What right do you have to blame the runners for the way they ran. Do you think Mulvaney really gives a f*** about the time, he's NCAA champion now... He got it right on the day.. Perhaps some of the other runners may now regret that they didn't take it out fast, because they needed to run the kick out of Mulvaney.. Championships are about winning, not times!!!!
