Earlier this week I started feeling a dull aching pain under the outside of my right foot -- right around the 4th or 5th metatarsal. The pain isn't intense, but aching, and particularly after I'm done running. It started on monday (did a 13 miler on sunday) and got a bit worse on tuesday, so i took wednesday off. I ran this morning (thursday) and it felt ok, but then after the run it flared up while i was walking around. It isn't localized, and I can press down on my metatarsals without sharp pain, but it seems be getting worse. I already wear a little metatarsal pad under my right foot b/c i had this problem several months ago, but it completely went away with the pad. Most of my mileage is on trails, dirt and gravel.
I've been building up mileage -- mainly 40 mile weeks then a 55 last week, and i was aiming for that this week as well. But now I'm only at 28 (i was supposed to double today) with two days left. I'm also in Italy, and about to set out for a farmhouse in the countryside far from any doctors or the like. I've been icing it after each run, and taking some alleve, but that's it.
Any advice? Do I run through it? Do I take Friday and Saturday off and see how it feels on Sunday? Is it ok to do an easy 6 the next couple of days?
damn. this sucks.
