My son has a high school XC race in the morning. For practice tonight the coach had the kids run a timed 5k. I thought the kids we supposed to rest before a meet?

1. How hard was his effort?
2. How important is this XC race?
Hard run. It’s the last race before district, it wouldn’t effect our standings.
The coach is stupid.

In college, each year our coach would have us run a 10-flat 2-mile in our trainers on our cc course (typically we did all our workouts per se in our race flats/spikes) the day before the All-Ohio meet, which was not on our course. Seemed crazy and I have no idea how he ever came up with the idea, but it worked - we always ran very well that next day. So I'm guessing your son's coach has some kind of plan.
I would be stunned if there is a reasonable explanation for running a 5K hard the day before a 5K race.
Also, why do they practice at night?
