Another key takeaway:
(9). Peanut butter is a liquid according to the TSA, so it is subject to the stupid volume limit. And good luck finding any PB in Berlin. I never could.
This depends on the TSA agent. I've had PB both confiscated or not confiscated on travel attempts.

This is true .... They confiscated my jar at Logan in April... Bast*rds.
Coach Jeff - That straw idea. Brilliant. I'm carrying one on Sunday. There's not much downside - it doesn't work, I toss it. It does, I save few valuable seconds. Like most others, I'm not great with the water cups. End up coughing half the time in the latter half. When I'm really hurting and stop to drink, pushing myself to get back running is a chore worth avoiding.
Darkwave - You're savvy. That's a great party trick with the handheld. Very cool that you qualify to have a bottle waiting - nothing to feel bashful about! Also, that workout in your long run last week looked beastly, which I'm sure is the exact word you'd like associated with it.
Great discussion about pushing yourself. I find the repeatedly counting my steps helps. Absolutely have to break down the race. When I'm deep in the pain cave Sunday morning it will be all about winning each mile. That's all that matters. Not the next one, not the last one. Just win the current mile.
I’m terrible with drinking while running. Always try to pinch but still spill most of it.
At Boston, fairly early on, someone handed out a water bottle and everyone in my little pack passed it around and shared. That was nice.
Napper - Looks like we both did the 3 x 1 T workout straight from Daniels? I waited until Wednesday since I needed an extra easy day after the weekend (or really because I went to the baseball game Monday night).
Drinks:
1.) Pinch half of top
2.) Squeeze from bottom like a juice box with remaining opening. (No head tip back to simulate waterboarding)
3.) Stop enough times during the marathon that it's ok if only a small percentage of each cup gets in your mouth.
4.) Dump as much water on your head as you drink. (I run hot but haven't had a marathon day under 60°F yet)

That part I’m good. Really helps when it’s clear who has water and who has Gatorade though.
Forgot
2b.) Incomplete pinch-off seal leading to 1/2 Gatorade in mouth and 1/2 Gatorade launched straight into eyeball.
darkwave - I could hardly imagine you being obnoxious.
Great discussion on fluid ingestion here, folks. I have yet to figure out that one. I am pretty bad at it. AJ is absolutely right about it breaking up one's breating rhythm.

Hey Lanc,
My 5k age-graded race score is a year old. Here's an update:
Age 51
10/6/2019
10km
42:40
72.53
Appreciate all the work! I hope to update that again soon.
Thanks Coach Jeff. I've updated, however, I'm using the Howard Grubb calculator for 2015 (that is what we discussed a few weeks ago I believe) and when I enter this info in, I get 71.02%... am I doing something wrong?

OK, no problem. I used the one at mastersathletics. The number itself doesn't matter to me... it's just for comparison and motivational purposes! Appreciate the effort with this1

Mine was more at MP, with 60 seconds rest. I feel like I'm on the verge of a strained hip flexor, hamstring, or achilles (in that order), all on the right side. So I'm keeping it pretty conservative until Sunday. Otherwise, I'd probably have run these about 10-15 seconds faster than MP. The only reason my hip flexor is sore is due to stretching. No good deed goes unpunished.

Same. I travel with PB at all times. But, I have given up on big jars (bigger they are, the harder they're confiscated), and now use the small squeeze tubes of it. It's amazing how many of them you can fit into a toiletries bag, and how convenient they are to put on EVERYTHING. Apple, Banana, bread, waffle, pancake, or, my personal favorite, squeeze tube to mouth.
Also, they have other nut butters that are great. Almond, Cashew, etc.
Good luck and safe travels to the Chicago crew! Looks like the coolest weather in recent years, and the wind forecast seems to have calmed a bit. For me personally, if I had to pick a “less worse” direction for the wind on that course it would be from the West. Hoping it is a good day to run and that you all hammer some beastly races.

+1. Bring it home fellas.
I’ve got RGM, Napper, and sub 6 in the tracker. Who am I missing? TL?
to quote Ice Cube "Get your mind right, and get your grind right"
Good luck in Chi Town fellas ... Gonna (hopefully) sleep in and wake up and watch/track before some easy yogging (soft J)
RRR I thought you were running a half marathon on Sunday?
Good luck folks. Eye of the tiger and whatnot.
Ahhh crap ... I am. I was thinking the Marathon was tomorrow for some reason. Sunday races are so rare in the south it throws me all off
Some brief comments,
GT - really solid two work outs
AJ - nice job in Berlin, impressive week after, should give yourself some physical and mental recovery
Pappy - 40 miles, getting back to it, nice job
GNR1 - nice job with that 10 miler
Lanc - solid race, I'm glad I got to witness it, I saw that picture before you posted it and thought it was perfect. We are planning on DE XC race again, I believe we had 5 or so club members there last year, is always a fun one
hobby jobber - hopefully the comradery will help you stay consistent, just from that alone you will improve
GT, jot quill, - Thanks, yeah it was two weeks ago as of this Sat, married life is great
Sub 6 - it was 55sec slower than her track PR, I asked her what she thought the difference was effort-wise but we didn't come up with a good comparison, hoping to get her in the 17s again this spring
Lanc List - 16:58.4 5k on 9/6/19 as a 25 year old, I would be really low without that result seeing how I haven't broken 18 min apart from it
As for me, some stomach woes again this week for me, inflammation, ordered a H Pylori blood test kit, will see the results from that then head to the gastroenterologist to finally get myself checked out (once I get health insurance that is, I just turned 26 so am switching from parents to wifes)
Pretty heavily leaning toward Deferring Philly Marathon and just laying a base for spring. Will still get in that DE XC race, turkey race and Club Nats.
Best of luck those running Chicago (and others racing), I'll be heading to Scranton this weekend to spectate Steamtown marathon, then maybe to Poor Richards Pub after
- RunnerSam
RRR: Thanks - and exactly - I might lack talent but want to train properly, set some goals and maximize my potential.
Coach Jeff: Appreciate the offer! I'll have to read past threads to see how your training/workouts have gone and won't hesitate to reach out.
Sub 6: Thank you (and true)!
RunnerSam: Absolutely - I'm hoping this creates a little accountability and motivation to keep making progress.
