People do.

Honestly I’d still pick Rupp to win if he was running like 30mpw and cross training a bunch. He’d have to have things go really wrong for him not to win the thing.

You can't be serious. He has the World record for 50 miles. Many course records. 1:04 half marathon with very limited half marathon training. He will easily win the trials in 2:10.
First of all his 50 mile run is just a record. Nobody has ever really raced that distance on roads. 100k is the World Record distance. And Jim got beaten really bad by this Japanese hobby jogger (60 mile weeks and working full time) 2x WC in 100k too.
Walmsley might finish 10 minutes after the winner at the trials.
Trials level is so low that he will be top 10 easily.
Folks, I'm not the one posting in this thread. Someone registered my username and is pretending to be me.
I'm not a Walmsley fanboy but also not a hater. I don't think he can make the olympic team in the marathon, but I definitely hope he'll run the trials. To be honest, though, I'm more interested in what he can do at Comrades: probably win, but maybe CR? Not out of the question.
To the moran who registered my username - - have fun, kid. I've moved to a new account.
Now go back to washing Jim's sweaty shorts, Eric!
Right....walmsley is going to run 217 off a 104 half and 130mpw. You really are a retard.

2:17 sounds about the right ball park. for that course and his first marathon.
Why are you so nasty? That's not really necessary.

Jimmy gonna win. Haters gonna hate.

Glass? Do you follow running? Rupp avoided injury basically his entire career until 2018.

First off, 50 miles isn’t a World Record distance. It’s not a competitive international distance. The others in the Hoka event weren’t even racing for 50 miles- they were racing for 100k. No pressure on him time trialing for 50 miles. His trail records have been time trials on American soil too. Put him up against international competition whether road or trail and he’s left behind or a midpacker at best.
I think what's quite hilarious in this thread is someone still referencing Mizuno, thus showing their lack of knowledge about the sport. Last I checked, Walmsley has the scalps of several Top 10 Olympic Marathon Trial guys that have run 2:12-2:15.
On a hilly course in Atlanta, he can lurk in the Top 15 and maybe even better if he gives a great training cycle like he did for Houston when he ran 1:04. As Canova says, 1:04 means 2:14, no problem.

Yawn, world best if we're being technical. Does that make you feel better?
Exactly. He's run it the fastest ever. What does it matter what it's called.
If, he is healthy and smart about it, he has the strength and tools to perform well in the crappy Atlanta course. It definitely suits a guy like him. Maybe not win it, but...can he be the "dark horse" 3rd or 2nd place? I would not rule it out.

Walmsley might run 2:14 on a flat course but for sure not in Atlanta. AND predictions are not reality. You still have to run it. And that might be hard and maybe impossible for Jim. Who knows.
https://lukehumphreyrunning.com/hmmcalculator/race_equivalency_calculator.phpI tried 3 calculaters on 1:04 with 130mpw. 1 said 2:12:xx and two said lowish 2:13. Elites on high mpw slow down far less between 13.1 and 26.2 that amateurs, but most calculators don't factor that in. My guess is he will be in far better than 1:04 shape (he did that off like 6 or 7 workouts) if he goes to trials and therefore will run somewhere in the low 2:12 range even with hills, which is his strength.
Eh. I certainly wouldn't trust your calculator: There's a much bigger list of runners who've run 1:04 halves than there are runners who've run 2:13:xx fulls...

Yes, but those guys trained for years to hit that 1:04. The dude trained for 8 weeks. He is a far better runner than a 1:04 with minimal training, but distance endurance is a joke to him compared to those guys. I am telling you his time will not drop off nearly as much as your average 104 guy.
that's a real name? walmsley? wtf anglo garbage
The fact is 26.2 is barely a long run for Jimbo. He will put those road sissies to shame and then will go crush some vert in the canyons the day after.
