TW,
I'm not sure running a 14 minute 5k has much to do with running the 800. With all due respect it's not possible for many young sub 1:50 runners to do that, much less a 40 year old. I think running a decent mile time is much more relevant, but furthermore, a person's 200m speed probably has much more correlation to the 800 than either the 5k or the mile!
The 14 min 5k shows your incredible range more than anything else.
Also, I'm not sure it's all that bad for people to make brash claims on here. Most of them are just fired up to attempt something difficult. When they fall flat on their face there's certainly no need to call them out. IF they are out in public bragging and lying about times, that's another thing. Call them out.
I'd say people on here setting goals and looking for advice are the people we want in the sport, and they represent what it's all about. Just because it was easier for you than it is for them shouldn't give reason to push them down if they fail.
Not trying to insult you, but it's a matter of perspective, and I think your perspective is slightly skewed because of your accomplishments.
However! It's understandable. And It's pretty damn awesome what you've been able to do as an "old guy". You've inspired a lot of others to get out and work hard against the stereotypes.
