No, but Mary Cain ruined AlSal with this. A month ago AlSal was rightfully exposed as a druggy coach; today’s Cain/nytimes article has driven the Oak stake through the heart of this Vampire...

No coach in the history of the sport has succeeded with every athlete they coached. Lydiard, Igloi, Cerutty, Stamphl etc., etc they all had successes but also athletes that did not prosper under then but succeeded with someone else.
You don't know how wrong this statement is! Coach JS has coached more than 300 runners of different levels and of course individual runners, and all of them improved ! Mary shouldn't be an exception ….

Who in their right mind would say that Salazar was qualified to train an elite 800m runner, teenager or 26 year old?
Salazar, by his own words, a pathetic 57 400m man, never had any business training Cain. Salazar's 400m & 800m personal bests would not even put him in top 25% for let'srun male posters.
So who is coaching Murphy and Brazier now? Salazar or Julian?
If it's Salazar, will he ruin them as well? If it is Julian, is he qualified? What were his 400 & 800 PB?
And I have no idea what Derek Thompson's 800m PB was...
As the pages of calendar turn, you NIKE stooges look worse every day.
Brazier and Klosterhaufen are (and have been since joining N.O.P) coached by Pete Julian, not Salazar.

No.
Unless that's a pseudonym for female maturation.
Lots of women get significantly slower in their late teens whether it's Claudia Lane, Mary Cain or Candace Hill.
This certainly didn't age well. Thank God you're not employed as a coach anymore.

He's not wrong.
Cain actually performed spectacularly under Salazar for some time. Then she went through female maturation. Salazar unsuccessfully (and unintelligently) tried to oppose female maturation. It didn't work. Cain thinks she lost everything thanks to being humiliated about her weight, but even free of Salazar for years, her performance has been garbage, and she has been noticeably fuller.
It could be. She for sure exited that program worse off than when before she came in. I mean, she cut herself to bleed because of the pressure from her coaches. And I guess people knew about it? That's a pretty surreal environment.
The right call was to leave. All that pressure from her coaches only to leave her in a state of injury.

As Cain said, an assistant of Salazar's.

I'm not so sure that coaching is a science.
THIS!!!
I don't consider myself a coach, but I have coached several adult runners to set age group state records.
In one case, an elderly runner kept making the same running form mistakes. I corrected almost all of them and he was much faster, but one problem stubbornly refused to change in spite of my best efforts. I tried videos, explanations, and different verbal cues... arms, legs, head, push, lift... nothing worked. Finally, I tried a different verbal cue. It worked! Later that summer, he ran the 17th fastest time in the world in his age group.
My point is that there is really an art to coaching.
Interesting that not one person on this thread got at the truth - that alberto abused/miscoached cain mentally and physically until she broke down both mentally and physically.
I dont' care what level of sports you are at...if a coach breaks down his or her athlete with absurd weight rules and drugs like Salazar did...then yes, Alberto Salazar did ruin Mary Cain.
