Every single competitor in the 2019 USATF women's 800m final ran the second lap slower than the first (between 2 to 7 seconds slower than the first 400m). Meanwhile, every single competitor in the men's 800m ran a negative split. I feel like I have commonly seen previous women's 800m races result positive splits. Why is this the case?
Full disclosure: I am not an 800m runner, so I have no idea about the strategy in for this distance. Everything I know about distance running suggests that your your last lap should be your fastest.
