There's been a popular legend of not having sex before sporting events for optimal performance. How true is this? I've read some doctors saying it likely doesn't make a difference while others say it could. Looking up testosterone levels after ejaculation you see that testosterone peaks at 7 days abstinence. Does that automatically mean peak performance is 7 days from sex/masturbating?
False, it doesn't make any difference. I did just a few hours before running my fastest time of the year before.....ran a 1.45 800m.

Nothing helps crush a race more than being irritable and not sleeping well for the week leading up to it
There is an excellent Science Versus podcast on this. Basically, it is bunk ... as long as you don't have sex within a few hours of an athletic activity it makes no difference in performance.
