many school's roster spots are filled by nonscholarship athletes - if you have had contact with coaches - phone, in school visits, etc - do coaches formally offer athletes a nonscholarship roster spot at some point in the fall? or does the athlete contact the coach and express a desire to walk on?
It doesn't make sense that you had visits and the coach didn't offer you a spot at that time. Your times were obviously fast enough for them to offer a visit so if they did not offer you a spot, you must have not been a good fit with the team members.

Sorry I wasn’t clear - met with coaches on unofficial visit with possible official this fall.

I can only speak to my experiences, but if you are going on an official visit with the expectation of being a walk-on. They may give $100 in scholarship and consider you a "preferred walk-on" because without the money nothing is binding you to them or visa versa.
Regardless, Communicate with the coach, tell him/her that you are interested in coming back for an official visit if that was previously talked about. Coaches may not want to pay for an official visit for a walkon unless they know you're serious. Communication is key and college coaches love it when you are good at it.
No coach is giving $100 scholarships because it is not worth all of the hassle for the admin staff. Most guys are walk-ons so yes they will do official visits and offer roster spots to the guys that they want. I have seen very upset parents and kids during visits when they get an offer to walk-on. Most wrongly assume that they will be getting a substantial offer due to the paid visit and from reading all of the BS on LetsRun about fake scholarships.

of course there is a bit of a balance - I don't want to be too eager to express the willingness to walk on if a small scholarship is an option
They will likely invite you to tryouts. If you are non-skolly you have no guarantee of any spot
Or you could simply ASK THEM and get a real answer instead of wondering, or worse, asking letsrun
If you get official visits, you will get walk-on offers. If you don't get official visits, it is unlikely that you will be offered to walk-on.
If a female meets the recruiting standards by a small margin, and is in the top 1 percent academically, based on curriculum and test scores, what are the chances that she can be a recruited walk on at top academic D1 school? I'm curious how the process works and how many distance girls most D1 coaches take each year.
