cj- don't worry haha, I love mid-distance/long sprint training!
berglaufer- I guess that's all that matters isn't it lol, I was just worried that even though it felt right, I could still be running faster and getting more aerobic gains while not tiring myself out too much.
Roberto- thanks man, will definitely look to build mileage and consistency
Trusty- thanks a lot for the detailed helpful reply dude, I definitely feel like I could speed up my normal training runs without it not feeling easy anymore, so I think I'll try hitting 9:30 average or quicker on some of my runs and building up to 25 mpw, and further down the line gradually to 50 (as you wisely note, 50 would likely cripple me right now lol, better to master 25 mpw and sustain it first). Just one potential concern: would putting in more aerobic mileage like this (I'm talking maybe 50 or above) not hamper 400m ability? Not that it's my primary event or something I'm especially talented in, but I enjoy running that too.
Overexplainer- that is also a good point, and one that I was thinking about. I do like the 800m most, but I also love the 400 and would like to maximize my potential in both. Maybe the advice on running more easy miles and tempos is geared toward base building? Or would that still look different for someone who's training for the 400 too? Thanks for you input!
400m training - I have toyed with fartleks before, and can see how they'd be more appropriate for the 400m runner trying to work on endurance. Thanks for bringing that up :)
The Floyd:
No running background, started running almost 2 years ago and for about 6 months of that it was just a few jogs here and there with a harder 15-20 minute effort once a week maybe averaging 10 miles or so a week. Starting beginning of 2018 I started taking it much more seriously.
No offense taken haha, I know these aren't blazing times for EITHER sex lol. I'm male, 26 years old. I find your point on easy distance runs for 400/800 types to make sense, but I thought I'd be an exception since I am SORELY lacking in the endurance department; I find most kids doing 400/800 training start with much better aerobic fitness than I and can afford to stick to more "sprintier" types of aerobic training. That's why I thought maybe doing some easy running and tempos would be good before making my training more specific. But that is an excellent point, thanks for insightful reply and advice, will consider it for sure.
SprinterJay: very good point, I guess improving my 100m to 200m conversion would be good for my 400m time, which would in turn improve my 800m ability. The 120-150 meter repeats you suggest make a lot of sense instead of going for easy distance. Thanks you for the reply, will look at this too. Is it maybe possible to have this type of training along with ,more aerobic training?
MatthewXC: sounds like no-nonsense advice to me, and something that looks quite like what I've been doing and plan on doing more of. Thanks man!
