2012 Olympic 800m 4th placer and 4-time US champ Duane Solomon raced at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville last night and finished with a 1:55.04 for last place. Obviously 1:55 isn't good for a guy with a 1:42.82 PB, but it's his first 800m race in over 2 years.
In a RunnerSpace article from March, 34-year-old Solomon explains how he's been bogged down by injuries the last two years and has switched coaches from Johnny Gray to Florida high school coach Ryan Lowe.
Talking about taking one more shot at greatness, Solomon said, “I believe I have unfinished business in the sport and my running legs are still relatively young considering I didn't have my breakout until 2012. I know I have more in the tank and I can still compete with the best. I am coming in unsponsored, but sponsored or not, for me it is not about the money, but the love and passion of the sport. ... I am pleased with where I am, and I am using this year as a build up into 2020. I truly believe by July, August, I will be back in the 1:44 range again, but I intend to take my time with the fitness and let everything come naturally and organically. ... I want other athletes to watch me at these upcoming seasons and know that it's never over unless you want it to be over. Just get out there and compete and hopefully this can ignite the flame in someone else who may have been thinking of hanging it up like I did.”
